Once a Celebrity...ALWAYS a Celebrity!!!
History of the Team Name
When Timberview opened, the inaugural team spent lots of time dreaming up a name. The story goes that a favorite bakery spot of the first director and members was the Celebrity Bakery in Arlington.
Since Timberview is the only school in Arlington, and the Celebrity bakery was a line member favorite, as well as a fun name that rolled off the tongue, the newest drill team in MISD was established in 2004 as the Timberview Celebrities Drill Team. The team logo/symbol is a star, as celebrities are stars on the stage, and in the sky. Going Strong
The Celebrities would soon take the MISD stage as MTHS's sweethearts, and are often affectionately called the Celebs. The Celebs grew over the years in technique and number, rounding out at 36 dancers, until Lake Ridge High School's opening.
While this split caused the Celebrities' team count to go down, their technique and competitive edge only increased. Kelly Gray led the team to win an MA National Title in 2014, making the Celebrities the only drill team in MISD to hold that title to date. Changing with the Times
In the fall of 2015, Ekena (Wilkins) Hawkins took over direction of the Celebs. She helped introduce the first JV Drill Team to the Celebrities-- known as the JV Stars Drill Team (eventually renamed Celebrities JV).
The former English teacher was honored to step into this role, and led the Celebs to achieve 3rd Place overall at MA Nationals her first year, and a State Championship Title with Crowd Pleasers Dance her 2nd year. After Hawkins left in 2017, Roland Latson took over the team. Widely known and admired for his outstanding choreography and technical skills, Latson finished his 5 years with the Celebs as the 2nd longest director of the team. |
